Muilenburg dusts competition en route to 11th victory of season

Nevada Speedway was filled to capacity with 93 cars hitting the historic dirt oval last Saturday. The large volume of cars filled both the north and south pit areas, as racers began gearing up early for today’s Late Model Special.

In the Late Model division, Verona’s Dusty Mooneyham tamed the field, taking home his fifth win of the season. It was no easy task for Mooneyham, who had to hold off Clay Daly. Daly, a Watsonville, Calif, native, ended up finishing second to Mooneyham.

Larry Jones was the man on the move, as the El Dorado Springs native started back in the ninth spot before weaving his way into a top three finish. En route to the third-place finish, Jones made a late pass on Joplin’s Steve Johnson, who was forced to settle for fourth. Trailing Johnson in the fifth place spot, was fellow Joplin native, John Coats.

The Late Model division is all set to battle it out tonight in the special feature event. In addition, the legendary Alan Vaughn hit the track for the first time in five years.

— Mini Stocks —

Starting on the outside pole, Steven “Batman” soared into victory lane in the Mini Stock division. James Witt, who started back in the sixth position, moved up four spots to nab the runner-up finish.

Meanwhile, pole sitter Weldon Rotramel, fell back a couple spots, landing in third-place, while Grandview’s Jessica Lane cruised into fourth. Rounding out the top five, was Osceola’s William Self, who dropped back two spots from his original starting position. While

Making his first trip to the speedway this season, Chanute, Kansas driver Bryce Weldon, emerged in victory lane. Weldon, who opened the race in the fourth position, bested Halfway’s Tyler Schoen in a photo finish.

After Schoen in the runner-up spot, was Carl Junction’s Thomas Dunham, who ascended four spots to score the third-place finish. Osceola’s James Leiber trailed Dunham in the fourth position (after starting eighth), while Nevada’s Zach Hendren netted a top five finish.

Hometown driver Karl Lehmann picked up his third win of the season Saturday night, holding off fellow Nevadan Scott Johnson in the process. Johnson, who made a late pass on Chanute’s Jason Thurman, slotted into the runner-up spot. After Thurman’s third-place finish, was Jessy Willard in the fourth spot and Nevada’s Shawn Hendren in fifth.

— Midwest Mods —

Track superstar Rob Muilenburg, who started with outside pole position won the 15-lap Midwest Mod feature in dominant fashion yet again — leading wire-to-wire en route to victory lane for the 11th time this season.

Starting on the second row, Ron Bolin Jr. was able to keep Muilenburg within his sights, but settled for the solid second-place finish. Nevada’s Cayden Campbell, who started way back in the 10th position, maneuvered his way through the pack, finishing in third. Fourth-place went to Sarcoxie’s Donald Aust. After battling it out with Aust, Chanute’s Chris Churning, who opened in the 12th position, nailed down the fifth-place finish.

— B-Mods —

The current B-Mod division point leader, Liberal’s Matt Rose, parlayed outside pole position into a first-place finish. After remaining idle for the past couple of weeks, Fort Scott’s

Brian Bolin returned in style, collecting the runner-up finish. Bolin made a late pass on fellow Fort Scotian Rusty Skaggs, who placed third. Butler’s Jeff Douty moved up one position for the fourth-place finish, while El Do’s Justin Pike grabbed fifth.

— A-Mods —

Mound City’s Jessy Willard chalk up his fifth victory of the year after making a dramatic pass on pole-sitter Jackie Dalton, of Carthage. Dalton placed a strong second.

Making his first trip to the speedway since 2015, Peculiar

Danny Scrogham placed third after side-by-side battle El Do’s Lucas Dobbs, who took fourth. Meanwhile, Craig Wood locked up another fifth-place finish.

Up next

Racing action returns today to the speedway, with the Late Model 30-lap Special on tap. The full program of racing is slated to begin at 7 p.m. sharp.
