The Cottey Comet basketball team absorbed a tough loss in its season-opener Nov. 1, falling on the road to the Hesston (Kan.) Larks, 82-49.

Leading by 19 at halftime, the Larks increased their lead to 33 at the conclusion of the third quarter, as the Comets trailed 67-34. The final frame was then played to a 15-15 draw.

Cottey freshman point guard and California native, Katrina Cantu finished with a team-high 14 points, while sophomore Karlie Acton chipped in five points, four rebounds and three steals.

“We had a rough shooting night for our season opener,” said Comets head coach, Stephanie Beason. “The good news is, our highest (field goal)percentage quarter was the fourth. So, I believe in this case, it’s not a scenario of being tired. For us tonight, it was more about being sped up and not in control of the the tempo. Because of this, a lot of our shots were rushed.”
