GVVC twinbill: Bronaugh drops pair to Montrose

After remaining idle for two weeks while on Christmas break, the Bronaugh Wildcats and Lady Wildcats returned to the court Friday, as host Montrose secured a pair of Golden Valley Vernon County conference victories. In the boys game, Montrose emerged with a 50-17 victory, while the Lady Bluejays toppled the Lady Wildcats, 63-44.

In the girls contest, Bronaugh trailed 35-15 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats then outscored Montrose 19-14 in the third, but it wasn’t enough, as the Lady Bluejays pulled away for the 19-point win.

For Bronaugh, junior forward Riley Knapp and freshman guard Bailey Cliffman finished with 14 points piece, while Montrose sharpshooter Abby Vogel, exploded for 32.

The loss moves the Lady ’Cats to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in GVVC-play.

“We started slow and played better in the third quarter,” said Bronaugh head coach, Daryl Dodson. “We are improving and the girls are working hard; we just need to keep working and soon good things will happen.”

In the boys contest, Montrose jumped out to a 22-4 first quarter lead, with the Bluejays leading 31-7 at halftime. Montrose then outscored Bronaugh 19-10 in a low-scoring second half as the Bluejays collected the 33-point victory.

Bronaugh was led by guard Kyle Harrell with a team-high 9 points, while freshman J.R. Stratford chipped in 6.

The loss moves Bronaugh to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in GVVC-play.

The Lady ‘Cats are slated for an opening round matchup against Dadeville, tonight at 6:30 in the Golden City Tournament. The Bronaugh boys, also competing in the Golden City tourney, tangle with Lockwood, today at 3:30.
