The Hume Lady Hornets got back on the winning track Friday at home, dispatching visiting Calhoun, 58-25, while the Hume boys were upended, 59-50.

Hume (8-2) led 13-7 after one quarter of play and 27-12 at the break. The Lady Hornets then outscored Calhoun 23-5 in the third, opening up 50-17 advantage through three quarters as Hume coasted to the impressive 33-point victory.

“The girls came out and got the job done,” said Lady Hornets head coach, Heath Heckadon. “Our defense wasn’t the best, and we missed too many easy buckets — but a win is a win.”

Senior forward Emmah Fillpot led the way for the Lady Hornets, finishing with a game-high 18 points. Junior forward Hannah Gorda added 11, while Katlyn Brooks and Hannah Swickhamer combined for 14.

In the boys contest, the Hornets put together one of their best performances of the season. Hume trailed 26-25 at halftime, before being outscored 16-12 in the third for a 42-37 Calhoun advantage. Calhoun was able to keep Hume at arms length in the fourth, outscoring the Hornets 17-13 for the final nine-point margin.

“We struggled to score in the first quarter and were in some early foul trouble,” noted Hornets head coach, Justin Wehar, adding, “the boys played very well in the second quarter, putting up 21 points.”

For Hume (1-8), freshman guard Kuper Moore and sophomore Jonathan Kellhoffer led the charge, dropping in a team-high 13 points apiece. Kellhoffer’s performance also included 10 rebounds, while Braxton Wikoff also finished with a double-double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds for Hume.

“The boys played a great game overall,” said Wehar. “I thought we made a couple of key mistakes in the second half that cost us. But we are a very young team this year, and getting a lot of (varsity) experience. Even though we didn’t win, this was probably the best game we have played this season. Putting 50 points on the board was a great accomplishment.”
