Tips for best quality submissions

Saturday, February 3, 2018

Around here one thing we really welcome is your submissions of photos of happenings in our community. The best email address to do so is lifestyles.ndm@gmail.com.

And here are a couple things to keep in mind when sending photos for best quality printing:

• Please send photos which are sharp and clear, and identify the people in them.

• Send them in the .JPG file format. There are a lot of other options, but jpeg is the best and most simple.

• And — in my mind — the most important, send the files at the largest size possible.

This is particularly an issue with folks who have iPhones. When you email photos from that model phone a helpful little menu pops up asking what size you want to send. Back when data connections on our phones were slow and expensive it made sense to be able to send a smaller sized image, especially when the image would only ever be viewed on another cell phone. But we need every little bit of resolution we can get.

I’m printing two examples of the same photo emailed from my iPhone, for one I chose “small” the other I chose “actual size” — I’ll let you decide which is which *wink*.

As a general rule of thumb I like to see file sizes more than 1,000 kb, and as you can see the “small” option reduces the file to only 25 kb which is not nearly large enough.

Thank you for your submissions. Keep ’em coming!
