Dewayne Edwin Everly, 81, formerly of Sheldon, passed away on Sunday, April 8, in Lathrop, Mo., following a lengthy illness. Wayne was born Aug. 22, 1936, in Madison, Kan., to William V. and Iola J. (Mead) Everly. He was united in marriage to Gladys V. “Val” Stagner on Feb. 12, 1958, in Batesville, Miss., and she preceded him in death on April 14, 2015.

Wayne was raised in the Madison and Eureka, Kan., area. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1955-1956, the Army National Guard in Nevada and also the U.S. Air National Guard from 1982-1984 in Blessings, Texas. Wayne worked for a time in Eureka, Kan., as a plumber before moving to Kansas City to join the Sheet Metal Workers. He worked as a sheet metal worker most of his life, primarily in the Kansas area. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 2 in Kansas City, Mo. Wayne resided in Sheldon where he raised livestock and operated a dog kennel for many years until moving to Lathrop, Mo., in 2014.

Survivors include four children, Wayne E. Everly, Jr. and his wife Dora, Fall River, Kan., Linda Santee and her husband Gary, Green City, Mo., Jack Everly and his wife Betty, Lathrop, Mo., Volantie Bogart and her husband Robert, Sheldon; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Val, he was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Chaplain Sue Hisel officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Friday and at 10-11 a.m. on Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
