Sheldon tracksters compete in Archie
Two members of Sheldon’s track-and-field team notched excellent showings Monday at the Archie High School-hosted meet.
Junior Matt Bogart scored a gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles — clocking a personal best time of 44.54; while sophomore student-athlete Meckinize McCartney recorded a personal best in the discus, with a throw of 68-feet.
“Both did a great job and were able to (achieve) personal records in their events,” said Sheldon head coach Joel McDuffey. “Matt had a great run in the 300. It was great to see them both improve.”
Standout junior Bryce Lamb was unavailable for the Archie meet, as he was with Sheldon’s baseball team at the time. Lamb qualified for sectionals last season in the shot put, and Bogart in the high jump.
“We hope to see both Bryce and Matt make another run for sectionals, and hopefully become state qualifiers. Time and dedication of the athletes will be a key to success,” said McDuffey, who is in his first season at the helm of the Sheldon track program. “The more they are willing to improve themselves and dedicate the time and effort to mastering the small skills, the more likely they are to have a good year.”
Added McDuffey: “We are looking to be a strong group of runners and improve as much as we can throughout the year. As of right now, our strength is mostly in the field events.”
McDuffey added that Sheldon track-and-field has a bright future, with many talented student-athletes at the junior high level.
“Junior high track has an increase in participation over last year,” noted McDuffey. “We have eight athletes this year that have come out to be a part of the team. The junior high track team has a positive outlook. We’re hoping to get them to improve individually in their events.”
