Pike presents flags

On Friday morning, former Navy Corpsman Shirley Bass and former Army Technician Grade 5 Charles Brown — residents of Nevada Nursing and Rehabilitation — were on hand as Missouri District 126 Representative Patricia Pike presented a state and national flag to facility administrator, Mike Catron. Said Bass, “I was stateside but I saw the Vietnam War in the soldiers I treated.” Returning to civilian life, she became a nurse. Said Brown, “I was part of a group brought back to the states after Germany’s defeat.” His unit was to get 30 days leave followed by training to be part of the invasion force of the Japanese home islands but the dropping of the atomic bombs and surrender turned his time into occupation duty; he was mustered out on Nov. 25, 1946. Catron expressed his gratitude after Pike said, “Both flags were flown over the Missouri Capitol and they represent what these two veterans helped to preserve.”
