SALINA, Kan. — Cottey Comet golfers Rachel Hancock and Kimberlee Scott hit the links for Kansas Wesleyan Fall Invitational, held Oct. 1-2 in Salina, Kansas.

Hancock continued her run of Top 10 finishes, placing 10th at the 26-play event — while Scott concluded with a 19th-place finish. Winning the event was Barton County (Kan.) Community College’s Vilma Efraimsson. Efraimsson carded a 36-hole 4-over-par 148.

An opening-round, and collegiate career personal best 11-over-par 83 left Hancock in eighth-place, while Scott wrapped day one tied for 16th with a 24-over-par 96.

The second round didn’t go as well for Hancock, as the sophomore from Nebraska carded an 18-over par 90 — dropping her two spots on the leaderboard (for a final score 29-over 173).

“Rachel just keeps inching her scores down,” said first-year Cottey head coach Eric Cameron. “But (she) was reminded that bad days do happen. And when they do, you have to accept it with dignity.”

Added Cameron: “Rachel has the ability to shoot in the 70’s, and I believe she will see it soon. Her biggest hurdle is the mental side of the game, and just like any other part of the game, it takes time.”

Scott, likewise, was unable to improve on her opening round score, as the Texas native fired a 27-over-par 99, dropping back three spots on the leaderboard. Scott finished with a two-day total 51-over-par 195.

“Kim had another solid outing,” noted Cameron. “She has four rounds in a row in the 90’s, and the course distances are not getting any shorter. I see her starting to produce scores in the 80’s this spring, maybe even next week. She just keeps getting stronger — and being able to hit greens in regulation is going to be a difference-maker.”

Concluded Cameron: “At the end of the day we look at scoring averages, not what happens in one tournament. Rachel’s scoring average has her ranked sixth in the Association of Independent Institutions Conference (AII), and Kim ranks 13th.
