Martha Lee York Carmichael, 89, of Nevada, Mo., passed away Dec. 26, at her home in Nevada, Mo. She was surrounded by her family. She was born on Feb. 22, 1929, in Osawatomie, Kan., to George A. and Marjorie O. Patterson York. She was married to her high school sweetheart, John Lee Carmichael, on Feb. 24, 1951, in Osawatomie, Kan.

Martha grew up in Osawatomie and attended school there. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Vocational Home Economics from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1951.

She taught Home Economics in Mound City, Kansas. She taught and was the Teacher in Charge at the State School for the Severely Handicapped in Nevada, Mo.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association and a member of Lares Club, the Nevada Country Club and was a 60+ year member of Chapter KK of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James York; and a sister, Mary Louise Roberts.

She is survived by a brother, George A. York and wife, Pandy, of Ft. Worth, Texas; two sons, John Carmichael and wife, Christy, of Filer, Idaho, and Bob Carmichael and wife, Julie, Lenexa, Kan.; one daughter, Susan Richardson and husband, Ron, of Cassville, Mo.; four grandchildren, Ryan and Hannah Carmichael, Lenexa, Kan., Luke Canfield and Jenelle, Eugene, Ore., and Sam Canfield and Michelle, Madison, Wis.; two stepgrandchildren, Tara Richardson of Columbia, Mo., and Matt Richardson of Springfield, Mo.; four great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha will be cremated and her ashes interred at the York Family Plot in Osawatomie, Kan. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Nevada Senior Center or a charity of your choosing in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
