The Nevada Lady Tiger varsity basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Saturday, falling to Thayer High School, 50-46, at the Scoreboard Guy Shootout in Mount Vernon.

Thayer, the No. 1 ranked team in Missouri Class 2 girls' basketball, led 18-17 at the half, but increased its advantage to 39-28 through three quarters of play — after outscoring the Lady Tigers 21-11 in the third.

Thayer then went cold from the field in the final stanza, connecting on just 20 percent of their field goal attempts as Nevada trimmed into the lead.

The Lady Tigers late surg came up just short, as Thayer held on for the four-point victory.

Thayer’s Julie Stone finished with a game-high 17 points, while Ali Bower chipped in a team-high 14 for Nevada.

“Even though we lost I thought we competed extremely hard and never quit,” said Nevada head coach Brent Bartlett.

“We definitely saw some things that we need to improve on and work on,” added Bartlett. “We still need to work on our rebounding, and also having a quicker release on our (shots). But overall, we will get better by playing a team like this.”

Big 8 West victory

Nevada returned to the hardwood Monday for a Big 8 Conference West division matchup with visiting East Newton, as the Lady Tigers romped to a 64-25 victory.

Bower dropped in Nevada’s first eight points, as the Lady Tigers led 19-8 entering the second quarter.

Lady Tigers junior point guard Calli Beshore took over in the second, scoring at-will en route to a game-high 20 points.

Additionally, Nevada’s smothering full-court press helped the Lady Tigers out to an insurmountable 44-12 halftime cushion, as Nevada improves to 8-2 overall (2-0 Big 8 West).
