Third-year Nevada High School varsity head football coach Wes Beachler said he was pleased with the strides his club has made during its four-day team camp this week.

"I really like the group we have," Beachler told the Daily Mail on Wednesday. "They seem to be pretty unified, a pretty cohesive group. They do a lot of things together outside of football, so that's always a good thing. And they're working hard. I think they understand that you have to play hard every play, and they embrace that. (Camp) is going pretty well so far."

The Tigers are two years removed from their last playoff victory, and finished last season 1-9 overall.

"We're changing a lot based on our personnel," Beachler said. "We're going to look similar to what we've been, but also have a few wrinkles because of different personnel."

Added Beachler: "There's some guys out (for the team) we didn't expect to have, and a few guys we expected to have who aren't here. So we've kind of catered our offense and defense to fit our personnel."

Speaking of personnel, Nevada's starting varsity quarterback position is still up for grabs. Vying to be the Tigers' signal-caller in 2019 are senior Matt Thorp and sophomore Dylan Beachler.

"They both have been told, and they understand that we may have to move one or the other, just because we need them playing different positions," said the veteran coach. "They've both been very receptive to that, and they have both been working hard at two positions. So that will work itself out over time."

If Beachler is tabbed the starting quarterback, Thorp will shift to fullback or tight end. If Thorp gets the nod at QB, Beachler will move over to wide receiver or wing-back.

Conditions were ideal for the high school camp Wednesday, as the morning temperature hovered in the mid 60s, with a crisp breeze for most of the (6:30-9) session — while the middle school camp followed from 10 a.m. to noon.

"It's been real hot for the middle school camp," Beachler noted. "But it doesn't get much better than this weather-wise at the end of July for football."

Beachler added that he's been thoroughly impressed with the Tiger middle school gridders.

Said Beachler: "The middle school camp has been awesome. We've been right around 60 kids (each session) so far. They're really athletic. Our offensive line has impressed me with how much they know. There's a good combination of size and intelligence, and a lot of speed there."

Summed up Beachler: "I think that's a good group coming up."

Nevada High's season opener is slated for Aug. 30, against visiting Reeds Spring.
