Lamar rolls past Nevada in Silver Tiger game, 42-0
The coveted Silver Tiger trophy will remain in the Lamar Tigers' possession for another year, as the visitors dismantled the Nevada Tigers, 42-0, Friday night at Logan Field.
The Big 8 conference West division loss moves Nevada to 0-8 overall, and 0-5 in the Big 8 West. The loss also extended Nevada's losing skid to 14. The convincing victory moves Lamar to 6-2 (3-2 Big 8 West).
Lamar led 14-0 after the opening frame, courtesy of a 29-yard touchdown run on the game's opening possession, and punctuated by quarterback Case Tucker's short TD scamper with 3:50 remaining in the period.
Nevada junior quarterback Dylan Beachler was picked off near midfield midway through the second quarter.
Lamar quickly capitalized, as all-area wide receiver J.D. Bishop scored from seven yards out. The extra point by second-team All-State kicker Juan Juarez handed Lamar a 21-0 lead.
Another costly Nevada turnover, this time on a fumbled snap by Beachler, resulted in a Lamar scoring drive. With under a minute remaining in the half, the other half of Lamar's QB committee, Dante Stahl, punched it in from a yard out.
Jaurez lofted through the extra point, and Lamar led 28-0 at the half.
Lamar received second half TD runs by Tucker and Jonathan Contreras, accounting for the final six touchdown margin.
"The frustrating thing is, in the first half, I don't know that they stopped us," said Nevada head coach Wes Beachler during his postgame radio interview.
Beachler continued: "We fumbled twice, killed drives. We had the holding penalty that called back about a 25-yard run. That killed a drive. If we maintain possession of the ball, and continue those drives — it could be a 14-14 game at halftime, instead of 28-0."
Beachler said ball-security will be a focal-point at practice for the upcoming week.
"I feel like we've been moving the ball on good teams," Beachler explained during the postgame presser. "We moved the ball on Cassville last week, and moved the ball again tonight. We just have to finish drives and not be our own worst enemy."
