Tiger fall to Mountaineers in district playoffs, 33-6
Despite a valiant effort, the Nevada Tiger football team was defeated in the opening-round of the Class 3 playoffs.
The season-ending loss came Friday night, as top-seeded host Mount Vernon Mountaineers upended No. 8 seed Nevada, 33-6.
On the games open series, Nevada picked up three first downs, with their drive eventually stalling out, and resulting in no points. On the ensuing possession, Mt. Vernon broke off a pair of long run plays, but turned the ball over on downs, as Nevada came up with a fourth-down stop deep in their own territory.
With 8:38 remaining in the second quarter, Justin Moore put Mt. Vernon on the scoreboard, courtesy of a 5-yard rushing touchdown. With the 2-point play failing, Mt. Vernon led, 6-0.
Near the six-minute mark of the second, senior quarterback Zach Jones connected with Cale Miller on a 15-yard TD strike. After punching in the 2-point play, Mt. Vernon led, 14-0.
Mount Vernon (10-0) padded it cushion late in the half, as Jones linked up with Rafe Darter for a 12-yard TD toss with 25 seconds remaining in the half. The Mountaineers were stopped short on the 2-point play, and led 20-0 at the half.
At the 10:38 mark of the third, Jones took a quarterback keeper 20 yards to paydirt. Another failed 2-point play left Mt. Vernon with a 26-0 advantage.
With 3:27 to play in the third, Moore plowed into the end zone from four yards out. The successful point-after kick handed the Mountaineers an insurmountable, 33-0 lead.
Nevada put together an impressive scoring drive late in the fourth, capped by senior running back Kolby O' Connell's first-career varsity touchdown, on a six-yard scamper — with the Tigers' missed 2-point play accounting for the final 27-point margin.
With the loss, Nevada concludes its campaign, 0-10 overall.
