Howarth, Dodson, Heard tapped as new NHS head coaches

Formerly occupying assistant coaching roles with Nevada High School, Blake Howarth and Kori Dodson have been elevated to the head coaching positions of girls varsity basketball and varsity volleyball. Mason Heard, meanwhile, has been tapped as the head coach of the Nevada Lady Tiger varsity tennis program.

After spending the past four seasons as an understudy to retiring head coach Brent Bartlett, Howarth is now set to take the reins of the Lady Tiger hoops program.

In a recent radio interview, Howarth indicated he will continue to utilize Bartlett's blueprint,, and is not planning on implementing any major philosophical changes.

The Lady Tigers are coming of three consecutive state tournament appearances, but are set to lose around 80 percent of their offensive production, and key statistical defensive output, with the graduation of a half-dozen seniors —all of whom were either major contributors — or varsity-rotation players.

Dodson takes over for departing head coach Ashley Thoreson, who compiled 200-career victories during her nine-year tenure as head volleyball coach. Additionally, Dodson has served on Thoreson's staff for the past several seasons.

Heard fills the void left by longtime girls tennis head coach Samantha Short. Heard, a decorated former NHS student-athlete, is currently an assistant coach on the NHS varsity wrestling team — and will remain in that position as well.
