Heartland Behavioral Health (HBH) is showing their support for Mental Health Month. Throughout this month they have displayed three banners on their front lawn honoring Children's Mental Health Week (May 4-8), Nurses Week (May 6-13), and Hospital Week (May 10-16). Their employees have received a sweet treat every day, a free T-shirt, and they had their Annual Food Truck Friday at their hospital.

"I realize the past few months have been extraordinarily tough and put extra strain on our team, but through this pandemic, I have seen resilience and patience from each one of our employees," said Alyson Harder, CEO, Heartland Behavioral Health. "They deserve to be celebrated for their continued commitment to changing the life of every child in our care."

Mental illness affects millions each day

Millions of people are affected by a mental illness every day. Approximately 1 in 5 adults (47.6 million people) and 1 in 6 youth aged 6-17 (7.7 million people) live with a mental illness. Fifty percent of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14 and 75 percent by age 24. The average delay between symptom onset and treatment is 11 years. Seventy percent of youth in the juvenile justice system have at least one mental health condition. Only 50 percent of youth (aged 6-17) receive treatment in a given year. Suicide is also the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-34. (source: www.nami.org/mhstats)
