On Tuesday 12/8 the Webb City Cardinals led by Nevada Alumni Larron Hurst. For anyone who has been around Nevada Wrestling for quite some time Tuesday night’s action brought back many memories as it was held at Nevada Middle School due to Nevada Tiger Basketball being at Wynn Gym. The wrestling team competed at the Middle School for many years. It was a special night as Webb City Head Coach was able to coach where his late father, Larry Hurst used to coach as Nevada Tiger Head Coach. Trip down memory lane over let us talk about the action from Tuesday night. The night started with four junior varsity contests, which were split with Nevada winning two and Webb City winning two. Nevada’s Brayden Koening and Luke Anderson both picked up wins by pin at 152 pounds.

The varsity action started at 106 pounds where both Nevada and Webb City were open. The first varsity contest was at 113 pounds where Nevada’s freshman Kynndrick Brooks got the night started quickly with a 0:36 second pin which gave Nevada a 6-0 lead in the team scores. Nevada’s Braylin Brooks followed by securing a pin fall victory with just 0:03 second left on the first period clock pushing Nevada’s lead to 12-0. In what may have been the match of the night Nevada’s Mokey Dawn fought back from a 10-2 deficit to pin his opponent to the delight of the crowd. Despite the Covid restrictions of only 5 spectators per wrestler the NMS gym was rocking and exploded when Dawn secured the pin. Dawn’s pin pushed the lead to 18-0. Webb City would get on the team scoreboard when Brenden Berry would pick up a hard fought victory 10-7 over Nevada’s Joseph Fahnestock at 132 pounds making the score 18-3. Webb City would pick up an open victory at 138 pounds making the team score 18-9 for Nevada. Webb City would pick up another win via pin at 145 pounds closing the team score to 18-15 for Nevada. Nevada freshman Tyler Longobardi would take the mat for Nevada at 152 pounds and have a back and forth match until Longbardi was able to secure a big victory via pin making the score 24-15. In another back and forth hard fought match at 160 pounds Nevada’s Zade Lee picked up a 13-10 win pushing the score out to 27-15 in favor of Nevada. Webb City would pick up another open win at 170 pounds getting the score closer at 27-21. Webb City picked up a win by pin at 182 pounds which would tie the team scores at 27-27. Webb City would take its first lead of the night when they received an open victory at 195 pounds making the score 33-27 in favor of Webb City. Nevada was in good hands however when offensive line mates would seal the victory. At 220 pounds Nevada’s Logan Smith would toe the line and come away with a pin fall victory which would tie the score back at 33-33. Smith’s victory would be followed with another pin fall victory by Nevada’s Skylur Mashek which would secure the Nevada team victory at 39-33.

It was a great night all around for Nevada Tiger Wrestling. All of our wrestlers fought hard win or lose, as did the Webb City Cardinal wrestlers. Nevada Head Coach David Hawks was pleased with his teams resilience to overcome the open weights, “We had a few open spots in the lineup but we wrestled well enough to overcome the deficit and get a dual win.”

Nevada will travel to Bolivar on Thursday 12/10 to face Bolivar, Osage and Pleasant Hill.
