The Cottey College and Ecclesia College softball teams entered Friday's doubleheader at Vanek Family Memorial Field with contrasting records — and left with them, too.

The Comets improved to 10-0 with a 16-1, 20-0 sweep over the Royals, who fell to 0-10.

Cottey senior pitcher Kirsten Wallace set the tone early by striking out the side in the top of the first inning of game one.

The Comets then batted around in the bottom of the frame, drawing four walks, absorbing a hit-by-pitch, and plating nine runs in the process.

Three of those runs came off a bases-loaded double to gap in left-center by senior Katie Fernandez — before sophomore Aryana Palencia drove in two more with the bases loaded with a single to centerfield.

After Wallace went 1-2-3 again in the top of the second inning, Cottey senior Lindsey Boord knocked a two-out base hit to center, scoring sophomore Rachael Young.

Wallace gave up her first hit in the third, but was able to retire the next three batters in order. Her day ended when head coach Mark Skapin brought in senior reliever Emily Killion to start the fourth.

The Comets poured it on in the bottom of the fourth with six more runs, highlighted by a three-run homer to center by freshman slugger Elizabeth Thomas.

Cottey continued to roll in the nightcap, getting a grand slam off the bat of Skylar Chappell, as well as a two-run diner by Caitlyn Morgan — who now leads the team with five homers on the season.

The Comets will host Culver-Stockton for two games on Saturday and two on Sunday.
