Nevada golf battles wind, tough course at Bird Dog Invite

Tuesday, April 6, 2021

As if the Briarbrook County Club course wasn't challenging enough, the Nevada High School boys golf team had to account for wind gusts between 15-30 miles per hour Monday at the Bird Dog Invitational.

The Tigers were one of 11 teams in competition, finishing ninth overall with a score of 399 — but saw junior Owen Swearingen tie for third overall with an 8-over-par 80.

Swearingen shot the best front nine of the tournament (a 1-over par 37, which included two birdies), before a pair of double bogeys midway through the back nine helped add seven extra strokes to his score — allowing Joplin's Fielding Campbell to win it with a 78. Teammate Harry Satterlee was right behind him with a 79 to pace Joplin's first-place score of 324.

Carl Junction finished second with 335, and Webb City was third with 347.

Rounding out Nevada's scores: Logan McNeley, 85 (35th); Lane McNeley, 109 (47th); Cordell Cox, 115 (49th); and Bryce Eaton, 119 (55th).

The Tigers will next compete in the Joplin Invitational on Thursday.
