Lady Tigers tennis wins at Monett; NEVC v-ball comes back to beat Lakeland

The Nevada High School girls tennis team won its season opener 7-2 at Monett on Tuesday — led by wins by Hallie Elkinton in no. 2 singles (8-5), Susannah Kimmell in no. 3 singles (8-1), Alissa Stutesman in no. 4 singles (8-1), Abbi Baldwin in no. 5 singles (8-3), Kourtney Vestal in no. 6 singles (8-1), Baldwin and Laura Kimmell in no. 2 doubles (8-0), and Stutesman and Vestal in no. 3 doubles (8-2).

“It was a great start for our girls,” stated NHS head coach Katie Alexander. “I saw a lot of positive things and some things we can definitely work on before our next match. The girls have been working very hard all summer. I am very proud of them.”

NEVC 3-2 OVER LAKELAND

Northeast Vernon County High School rallied back from a two-set deficit to beat host Lakeland Tuesday night on the volleyball court (26-28, 10-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-12).

“After the second set, the girls’ nerves had subsided, and they began focusing on the game,” stated NEVC head coach Emma Schellpeper. “I was very excited and proud of all the girls. It made for a fun night.”

WHEATON SWEEPS SHELDON

The Sheldon High School volleyball team dropped its season opener at Wheaton Tuesday, 3-0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-13).

“We always have to get the first game jitters out,” SHS head coach Emily Godsey stated. “I am excited to see what is in store for us this season.”
