Marvin Arlington Long, 84, Lamar, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar. He was born Jan. 31, 1920, in Vernon County, to Harley R. and Freda (Yount) Long. He married Lorraine V. (Lucletta) Long on June 7, 1941, and they made their home in Irwin, Mo., until 1998 when they moved to Lamar.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the 43rd Infantry Division, 169th Regiment, reaching the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Distinguished Unit Badge, and Good Conduct Medal while serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a retired farmer, dump truck owner/operator, and worked for Dermott Oil Company. He was a member of Verdella Freewill Baptist Church.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Linden Long. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine, of the home; three sons, Robert M. Long, of Webb City, Richard D. Long, of Lee's Summit, and Ron Long, of Carthage; one daughter Sherrie L. Fry, of Carthage; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; two brothers, Howard Long, of rural Lamar, Dayton, of Nevada; three sisters, Velma Miller, Leta Skief, of Lamar, and Mary Hanneman, of Raymore, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar. Visitation will be today, Dec. 1 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Daniel Funeral Home, 1201 Broadway. Lamar, (417) 682-5518. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens, 901 East 19th, Lamar, following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
