August Junior "Gus" Yarick, 95, of Hume, passed away at the home on Sunday, April 17, 2005. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m., on Sunday, April 24, at the Hume Christian Church. Inurnment of ashes by immediate family will be at the Littel Cemetery, Pleasanton, Kan., the following week.

August J. Yarick was born Nov. 1, 1919, to August William Yarick and Elizabeth Magdalena (Yoss) Yarick of rural Hume. A.J. graduated from Hume High School in 1937 and remained in the Hume area his entire life. While serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, A.J. married Dorothy Keller, of Hume, in I944.

A.J. kept busy with livestock and school, 4-H, church and sports events of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He served as Hume's substitute mail carrier and member of the Hume School Board, Stotesbury Grange and American Legion. He thrived on social interaction with friends and neighbors often stopping for a quick visit or to deliver buckets of fresh sweet corn on his ATV or truck tailgate. His family remembers the Sunday night popcorn, gallons of homemade ice cream and his constant support in tough times.

A.J. was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Paul, Fred and Frank Yarick and Susanna Robinson; daughter-in-law, Barbara (Clark) Yarick; son-in-law, Walter "Kevin" Upp; and great-grandsons, Joseph and Nathan Armentrout. Survivors in addition to his wife, Dorothy, of the home, include four children, Meredith and Mariott Yarick, Marsha Casey, all of Hume, and Merna Upp, of Merriam, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
