Harry E. Sumner

Harry E. Sumner, 87, Stockton, Mo., died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Mo., following an illness of several weeks. He was born April 4, 1918, in Vernon County, to Woodford Wilson Sumner and Bessie Lee Walker Sumner. He was married Dec. 20, 1941, in Lamar, to Kathleen Thomas. She preceded him in death Dec. 7, 2004.

Mr. Sumner was born and raised in Vernon County, and graduated from Metz High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of War. Following the service he returned to Kansas City, Mo., and worked for a number of years there. He returned to Metz in 1951 and operated his own business in Metz until his retirement in 1975. He moved to the Stockton area at that time and has resided there ever since. He was a member of the Stockton Christian Church and the American Legion in Stockton.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Sumner and his wife, Charlene, Gladstone, Mo., and Richard Sumner and his wife, Lee, Anaheim, Calif.; one daughter, Janice Sue Snail and her husband, Rick, Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walker Sumner and his wife, Helen, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; and one sister-in-law, Marie Sumner, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 16, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with Mike Tunnell officiating. Interment will follow at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

Friends may call from now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday between 5-6 p.m.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Stockton Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
