Kelly D. Coons

Kelly D. Coons, 51, Newton, Kan., passed away on Oct. 3, 2006, at Residence, Kan. He was born Nov. 29, 1954, the son of Betty Jo (Miller) and Donald Coons in Newton.

He attended Newton High School and played on the baseball team that was honored as the 1970 state champion. Kelly attended Emporia State University, and continued his love for baseball by playing for Emporia State. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1972-74. His hobbies included baseball, golf, bowling, music and playing the guitar.

Survivors include his father, Donald Coons, Nevada; son, Matthew Coons and wife Ellie, Nevada; grandchildren, Ivorie and Laney, Nevada; brother, Douglas Coons, Newton; sister, Kim (Coons) Buckle and husband Gary, Newton. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jo (Miller) Coons.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m., Oct. 7, at the First Christian Church, Newton, officiated by Gary Bell. Burial was at 4 p.m., at the Peace Creek, Sylvia, Kan. Visitation was at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 6, from 12-9 p.m., and family will greeted friends at the funeral home Friday from 6-8 p.m.
