John Walter Compton

John Walter Compton, 85, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Vernon County, Mo., to Bonnie Phillip Compton and Tillie Augusta Montie Compton. He married Beverly Sue Long on Sept. 8, 1946, in Nevada, and she survives of the home.

John was born and reared in Vernon County and spent most all of his life here. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II in the South Pacific. Following the war, he returned to Nevada and joined the National Guard in 1949. He worked at Camp Clark for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Nevada, the BPOE No. 564, and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Survivors in addition to his wife Beverly, include one daughter, Connie Daniels and her husband Lawrence, Moundville, Mo.; two granddaughters, Staci Neher and her husband Travis, Jasper, Mo., and Marci Daniels, Nevada; three great-grandsons, Austin Strickland, Dallas Strickland, and Kourtney Workman, Nevada; and three sisters, Eula McReynolds, Nevada, Helen Fritts, Carrollton, Texas, and Vanessa Kaup, Nevada.

No services are planned at this time. A private committal service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
