Roger Owen Stapes

Roger Owen Stapes, 69, died of cancer in his home in Sante Fe, N.M., on March 8, 2006.

Roger was born May 16, 1936, near Redfield, Iowa, the son of Lloyd A. and Wilma L. Stapes. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1954 and immediately enrolled at the AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated with honors in December 1955.

In 1956, he moved to Omaha, Neb., and began work at Union Pacific Railroad. In 1958, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a communication specialist. Roger then returned to his job with Union Pacific until his retirement in 1998. On Feb. 14, 2002, Roger and Judy Hall of Omaha were married.

Roger is survived by his wife, Judy, Sante Fe, N.M; one brother, Reid and his wife, Martha Sauer, Urbandale, Iowa; one uncle, Richard Wilson, Nevada; one aunt, Olive Ditmars, Sheldon; numerous nieces and nephews.

Roger was very proud to have been a U.S. Army veteran. His full military burial was held in Sante Fe, N.M., at Santa Fe National Military Cemetery. Cremation burial will be held at a Redfield, Iowa, at a later date.
