Oma Mitchell

Oma Mitchell, 98, of Fort Scott, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008, at the Fort Scott Medicalodge. She was born Oct. 6, 1909, in Garland, Kansas, the daughter of John William and Minnie June (Brown) Stroud. She married Chester D. Mitchell Feb. 23, 1927 in Girard, Kan. He preceded her in death Dec. 17, 2004.

She and Chester moved to Fort Scott in 1948. Oma worked at Whiteside's West for 15 years, until her retirement. She loved gardening, and flowers. She liked to fish, and make quilts and doilies. Many were blessed by her handiwork. She was a member of the Hiattville United Methodist Church, the UMW, and the Hiattville Lodge No. 369, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a son, Donald Leon Mitchell and his wife Mary Jane, of Butler, Mo.; and a daughter, Veroma Grace Bailey, of Paola, Kan.; a daughter-in-law Carol Mitchell, of Burlington, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Oma was preceded in death by a son; Jack L. Mitchell, her parents, three brothers; Joe, Albert, and Gil Stroud, one half brother; Bob Stroud, and four sisters; Maye Ballard, Virginia James, Florence Kinder, and June Heyl, and a son-in-law; Lloyd Bailey

The Rev. Andy Smith will conduct funeral services for Oma is at 10 a.m., Monday, April 7, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas, and left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, P.O. Box 309, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
