Philip Norman McCarty, 86, of Nevada, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, at Moore-Few Care Center. He was born April 25, 1922, in Jameson, Mo., to Harry I. McCarty and Maude Frankie Smith McCarty.

Mr. McCarty was born in Jameson, Mo. After graduating from high school, he was inducted into the Army Air Corps, Dec. 26, 1942, with the 8th Fighter Command, 406th Bomb Squad, where he was a tail gunner in B-17 aircraft and was discharged Oct. 7, 1945. After his discharge he attended the University of Kansas, graduating with a degree in music education/music therapy. He went to work for the state of Missouri in the mental health field and later worked for the state of Illinois. He retured to the state of Missouri in 1973. He worked as a program director at the Nevada State Hospital until his retirement. He was a member of Bellamy V.F.W. and the University of Kansas Alumni Association.

Survivors include two sons, Gary McCarty and his wife Diane, of Emporia, Kan., and Pat McCarty and his wife Chris, of Nevada; four grandchildren, Alyson, McCarty, of Nevada, Patrick M. McCarty, of Lawrence, Kan., Erin Ipock and her husband Michael, of Branson, and Kelly McCarty, of Manhattan, Kan.; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Pierce and Kenzi Ipock. He was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Zoey Ipock, and one brother Neal McCarty.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., today, May 13, at the National Cemetery, in Fort Scott, with Dr. William Cox officiating.

Friends may call now and until 2 p.m., on today, at the Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 1 to 2 p.m.
