Eugene "Vernon" Speakes

Eugene "Vernon" Speakes, 97, of Prescott, Kan., passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Prescott Countryview Nursing Home. He was born May 12, 1911, in Hume, Mo., the son of Clyde and Jane Reynolds Speakes. He graduated from Hume High School and attened Pittsburg State Teacher's College. He married Mary Rebecca Bell, September 1933, at Mound City, Kan. She receded him in death on June 16, 2004.

Vernon was a member of the United Methodist Church, in Prescott, Kan., where he taught Sunday School for a number of years. He was a lifetime member of the State & National Grange, the Republican Committee, past director at the Prescott State Bank and The REA Board; past president of Farm Bureau and Friendship Villa. Vernon helped many students with scholarships though the years.

He was preceded in death also by his parents and three sisters, Ruby, Ruth and Helen. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 2, at the Prescott United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Contributions are suggested to the Countryview Nursing Home or Prescott United Methodist Church. Interment will be held in Littell Cemetery.
