John Rex Winters

John Rex Winters, 79, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Freeman Health System West, Joplin, Mo., following a short illness. He was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Walker, Mo., to Rex Edward Winters and Lizzie Mae Nichols Winters. He married Dorothy Louise Mitts on March 23, 1949, in Nevada, and she survives of the home.

John was born and raised in Walker, Mo., and graduated from high school there. He served in the United States Army for two years. Following the service, he worked various jobs including Cedar Lawn Dairy, Foremost Dairy and later for Highland Dairy. He also drove the Manor Bread delivery truck. John last worked for Joseph L. Pohl Construction for many years until his retirement. Following his retirement, he worked at Wal-Mart for several years. He was a member of the Laborers Local No. 663 in Kansas City, Mo., and a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Nevada.

In addition to his wife Dorothy, survivors include one daughter, Sharon Borders and her husband Jay, Nevada; one son, Rex Winters and his wife Cindy, Nevada; five grandchildren, Michele Leonard, El Dorado Springs, Mo., Melissa Forester, Nevada, Maria Hoover, Springfield, Mo., Beth Reeves, Lawson, Mo., and John Rex Winters II, Nevada; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Pritchett, Arizona, and Barbara Duty, Camdenton, Mo., and one brother, Harold Winters, Bowie, Texas. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 19, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with pastor Jerry Pyle officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
