Spring storm makes for perilous travel

The various kinds of precipitation over the weekend caused a few vehicle slide-offs around the county on Saturday according to Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman but no accidents in Nevada were reported by the Nevada Police Department.

"Saturday we had several slide-offs but other than that we just got lucky," Peckman said.

A Nevada woman was injured in a crash on 32 Highway south of El Dorado Springs Saturday morning. Tasha M. Jones, 19, Nevada, suffered moderate injuries and Charles Z. Pyatt, 29, and Joseph J. Roberts, 31, both of Jerico Springs, suffered minor injuries when Jones turned left in her 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier in front of Roberts' 1990 Chevrolet Lumina. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Stewards Wrecker of El Dorado Springs and all three injured parties were transported to Cedar County Memorial Hospi-tal, in El Dorado Springs.

The rain caused some flooding which will continue most of the week in three local rivers, causing road closings in various parts of Vernon County, according to the National Weather Service. The Osage, Little Osage, and Marmaton rivers are all at or above flood stage as of Monday morning and all are expected to crest later in the week and fall below flood stage sometime after that.

Monday morning the Osage River was at 30 feet near Schell City, which is right at flood stage, and expected to crest at approximately 31.8 feet by early Friday morning when it will begin falling. The Little Osage river near Horton was at 43.8 feet Monday morning and expected to crest near 45 feet by Tuesday and fall below flood stage, which is 41 feet, by Thursday morning. The Marmaton was at 24 feet, four feet above flood stage, Monday morning and expected to crest near 24.8 feet by early Tuesday afternoon.

"Rivers are out and a lot of roads are covered," Peckman said. "I'm just thankful we're not like out west or up north, where it's really bad."

The dispatcher at the Vernon County Jail didn't have a list of roads that were closed but said ". . . it's the same ones as always."

The last sentence of this article really shows how YOUR sheriff runs his office, WHAT ARE THE SAME OLD ONES??? You can't get a answer from anyone about anything, and peckman won't return your calls. I guess thats called SERVING ALL THE PEOPLE NOT JUST THE WELL KNOWN!!! HA!!!

i think they need to find better people to run that crazy dispatch. called up there one day to ask where a certain county rd was. the woman had no clue!! now how in the world if something happens is anyone going to get some help in time. incompitant is what i call it.
