James Edward Monroe Sr., 77, Nevada, passed away suddenly at his home Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009. He was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Michigan City, Ind., to George R. Monroe and Marcella Surber Monroe. He was married Jan. 31, 2002, in Miami, Okla., to LaVerne Archer and she survives of the home.

Mr. Monroe served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married his first wife, Dolores, in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised his family there. He moved to this area in 1986 and lived the remainder of his life here. He owned and operated The Bottle Shop in Nevada and later, Possum Pete's RV Park. He was a member of the VFW post No. 2175 in Nevada and had recently retired as Quarter Master after eight years of service, and was a member of the Nevada Elks Lodge No. 564. He enjoyed his seven acres of land and operating his John Deere tractor.

In addition to his wife, LaVerne, survivors include: three sons, James E. Monroe Jr., and Chris Monroe, both of Nevada, and Pat Monroe, Fort Scott; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; five stepchildren, Joanna Patton, Wichita, Kan., Buddy Archer, Sheldon, Mo., Anita Norris, Nevada, Andy Archer, Clear, Ark., and Melissa Hargrove, Strafford, Mo.; 10 stepgrandchildren and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and first wife Dolores June 23, 1998.

The family will receive friends between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday evening, Sept. 10, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. There are no other services planned.
