Mrs. Hazel Marie Gordon, widow of Paul H. Gordon, passed away in Nevada on Sept. 5, 2009, at the age of 89. A service was held at Ferry Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 8, followed by burial at Newton Burial Park. There was a visitation held at Ferry Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 7.

Hazel Gordon was born on July 11, 1920, in Broadlands, Ill., to Myrtle and Frank Boyd. She graduated from high school in Long View, Ill., where she was named best female athlete. Sports, as well as music, would remain favorite pastimes throughout her life. As a resident of Nevada for 64 years, she participated in softball and bowling leagues. However, golf brought her the greatest joy. She was a member of the Nevada Women's Golf Association and the Nevada Country Club. She married Paul Gordon, a long time John Deere dealer in Nevada, on Nov. 18, 1944, in Kansas City.

Prior to her marriage, she and her mother started what would be her first business, Boyd's Sandwich Shop of Alton, Ill. It remained a family business that was owned and operated by her brother and his wife, Bob and Betty Boyd, until 1987. In Nevada, Mrs. Gordon owned and operated a sandwich shop named Campus Corners from 1962-'65 which was located across from Cottey College on Cherry Street. Mrs. Gordon was a member of Athenas and the First Christian Church, where she sang in the choir for 20 years.

Hazel Gordon is survived by her daughter, Judy Gordon of New Braunfels, Texas; son Boyd Gordon and wife Terri of Castlerock, Colo.; son Mark Gordon and wife Lucinda of St. Simons Island, Ga.; four grandchildren, Matthew Ferry of Washington, D.C., Ben Ferry of Bethesda, Md., Christopher Gordon and wife Kate of North Glen, Colo., and Cynthia Gordon of Castlerock, Colo.; brother Robert Boyd and wife Betty of Bethalto, Ill., and 14 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul along with two brothers, Charles Boyd and Paul Boyd of Alton, Ill., and sister Betty Ringo of Joliet, Ill.
