Mary Frances Shotts, 78, Fort Scott, Kan., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at her home in Fort Scott following a lengthy illness. She was born July 5, 1931, in Stampers Creek, Ind., to Roy VanMeter and Mary Iva Fluhr VanMeter. She married Thomas Jefferson Shotts on March 6, 1951, in Floyd County, Ind., and he preceded her in death in November 1991.

Mary grew up in Indiana and went to school there. She came to Nevada in 1975. Mary worked in the medical profession all her life. She was an LPN and worked at Nevada State Hospital from 1975-'95 until her retirement.

Survivors include her children, Mary K. Jones and her husband Herb, Nevada, Carol S. Wilson and her husband James, Nevada, Roy T. Shotts Sr. and his wife Carol, Nevada, Ruth A. Ecrement and her husband Jerry, Frontenac, Kan., John F. Shotts Sr. and his wife Denise, Fort Scott, and Linda C. Ayers and her husband Rick, Nevada; 93 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Loretta S. Rife, New Albany, Ind., and Patsy A. Ramey, Fort Scott, and one brother, Robert E. VanMeter of the state of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Eddie J. Shotts; one brother, Roy H. VanMeter; one sister, Clara Rose VanMeter; and two grandchildren, Catherine King and Kelly Master.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada.

Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 1-2 p.m., on Friday at the funeral home.
