Doris Jean Duffey McVay

Doris Jean Duffey McVay, 88, Nevada, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Freeman Health System West in Joplin, Mo., following a short illness. She was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Tulsa, Okla., to Thomas Benjamin Cox and Leola Lavera Davis Cox. She was married to her first husband, Boyd Duffey, for 27 years until he preceded her in death in 1971. She later married Robert McVay and he survives in Topeka, Kan.

Doris was born in Tulsa and graduated from Rich Hill High School. Doris was a farm wife for a number of years. Then at the age of 47, she went to Pittsburg State Teachers College and graduated at age 50. She taught school in Nevada for many years and later in Topeka, until her retirement. She came back to Nevada in 2007 where she had since lived.

Survivors include one son, Steve Duffey and his wife Janie, Nevada, Mo.; two granddaughters, Gina Foster and Tricia Botka, both of Basehor, Kan.; five great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Roberta Jeffrey and Florence Stuver, both of Topeka, Kan. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Harold Cox and Donald Cox, and one sister, Willetta Bell.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with the Rev. Terry Mosher officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.
