Irene W. Johnson, 101, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a brief illness. She was born Oct. 17, 1908, in Horton, Mo., to James Wilhoite and Birdie Shaw Wilhoite. She married Robert S. Dean in 1928 and later was married to James Floyd Johnson. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1986.

Irene was born and reared in Horton. She later moved to Nevada in 1997 to be closer to her family. She attended Nevada Schools and graduated from Cottey College in Nevada. She worked as a cashier at Maxwell's Grocery Store and later Thriftway Grocery for many years before retiring at the age of 82. She was an avid gardener who loved being outdoors. She enjoyed having many pets, whether they be dogs, cats, calves, and/or horses. Irene spent her spare time crocheting and making quilts.

Survivors include one son, James Dean and his wife Doris of Nevada; two granddaughters, Linda Hoffman and her husband Marty, and Deena McVay and her husband Robert; four great-grandchildren, Kendal Hoffman and his wife Kyla, Amanda McVay, Alana McVay, Ashton McVay; and several great-great-grandchildren, all of Nevada. She was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, Feb. 25, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. David Rorabaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Rinehart Cemetery, Richards, Mo. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m., on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.
