George Robert Ewing, 91, Mt. Vernon, Mo., formerly of Sheldon, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin. He was born March 9, 1919, in Fort Scott, Kan., to Walter Clarence Ewing and Laura Nettie Miller Ewing. He married Ona Earlene Ewing on Feb. 13, 1953, in Joplin, and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2007.

George grew up in Fort Scott and attended school there. He joined the U.S. Army and served from December 1941-1945. He taught high school for 48 years in various places including Hume, Walker, Sheldon, and Montrose. He has lived in Sheldon since 1968.

Survivors include one daughter, Robyn Fowler, Sheldon; a son-in-law, Kerry Fowler, Sheldon, Mo.; two granddaughters, Crystal Dawn Shepherd and her husband, Jay, Mt. Vernon, and Charity Lynn Ogle and her husband, Justin, Nevada; three great-grandchildren, Cade Ewing Shepherd, Avery Lynn Ogle, and Lawson Heath Ogle; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; three brothers, Clarence C. Ewing, and twin brothers, Leslie and Weslie Ewing; and three sisters, Nettie Biggs, Blanch Ryan and Nora Delaney.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4, at the Nevada Assembly of God Church, Nevada, with Lawrence Shuey officiating and assisted by the Rev. Robert Chastain. Interment will follow in National Cemetery, Fort Scott, at 2:30 p.m., with Military Rites performed by Fort Scott VFW. Friends may call now and until 11:30 a.m., Monday, at Ferry Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 3, from 4-6 p.m.
