James Edward Scott

James Edward Scott, 85, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at the Mercy Health Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Alvarado, Texas, the son of Charles Edward Scott and Esther Sherman Scott.

He served in the United States Merchant Marines before serving in the Army combat infantry. He married Flora Lorene Alexander in 1951 at Eureka Springs, Ark. She preceded him in death in 1999. James worked as a truck driver for most of his life. He was also a crop farmer and dairy farmer. Later in life he worked as a courtesy van driver for Mercy Health Center. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and playing triominoes and bingo. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Fulton Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church. He was a man known for always doing something for the benefit of others.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Downing and husband, Denis, Fort Scott, Kan., Darlene Kleiwer and husband, Mike, Pittsburg, Kan., and Ruth Seamon, Louisburg, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, as well as his parents.

Funeral services for James Scott will be held at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery with military honors by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Monday, in the Cheney Witt Chapel.
