Betty Jean McCoun, 70, Sheldon, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Butler, Mo., to Louis Schepeler and Elise Zumbrunner Schepeler. She was married July 20, 1958, in Prairie City, Mo., to John H. McCoun and he survives of the home.

Mrs. McCoun grew up in Prairie City and graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1958. Following her husband's retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1974, they returned to Rich Hill, Mo. Betty has lived in rural Sheldon since 1990. She was a member of the Sheldon Christian Church and TOPS in Nevada. She enjoyed antique shopping, cooking, her flower garden and taking walks.

Survivors in addition to her husband, John, include three sons, Tim McCoun and his wife, Brenda, Appleton City, Mo., Terry McCoun and his wife, Sheila, Plattsburg, Mo., and Tom McCoun and his wife, Leslie, Horton, Mo.; one daughter, Traci Ussery and her husband, Alvin, Sheldon; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Mabel Rose Williams.

Due to pending weather conditions, funeral services have been changed to Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m., at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. David Rorabaugh officiating. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery, Rich Hill. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday, between 1 and 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service.
