Nellie Mae Carpenter

Nellie Mae Carpenter, 86, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Medicalodge of Fort Scott. She was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Deerfield, Mo., the daughter of Ed and Nellie Zimmerman Lawrence. Nellie married William A. "Bill" Carpenter in November of 1942. He preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 2003. She worked for 15 years as a seamstress for the Nelly Don Garment Factory in Nevada, Mo. She loved playing bingo and knitting afghans. She enjoyed her devoted dog Spot. She leaves many dear friends from Medicalodge. She was a member of the Community Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Bill Carpenter Jr. and wife, Diana, Fort Scott; a daughter, Donna Schilling and husband, Dale, Fort Scott; and three brothers, Junior Lawrence, Fort Scott, Chet Lawrence, Wichita, Kan., and Loren Lawrence, Nevada. Also surviving are two grandsons, Doug Carpenter and fiancé, Kelcy, Louisburg, Kan., and Travis Schilling and wife, Tina, Fort Scott; and two grandchildren, Taylor and Tabitha Schilling. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Lawrence and Lorain Shepherd; a grandson, Scott Carpenter; as well as her parents.

The Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct graveside services at 11 a.m., Friday, June 10, in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Cheney Witt Chapel from 10 a.m. until leaving for the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Medicalodge Activity Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, PO Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
