Ruth Whitcomb

Ruth Whitcomb, 94, of Kincaid, Kan., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at the Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care Facility, Garnett.

She was born on March 31, 1917, in Kincaid, Kan., the daughter of James and Lena (McCabe) Main. Ruth graduated from Lone Elm High School in 1934.

Ruth was united in marriage to Charles Melvin Whitcomb on Sept. 27, 1934, in Iola, Kan. This union was blessed with nine children.

She was a homemaker, and she enjoyed making cookies, crocheting and quilting. Ruth also loved her garden and canning. She also enjoyed fishing and swimming with her family. As a young girl and into adulthood Ruth attended the First Baptist Church, Kincaid. She later attended the Hope Chapel Assembly of God, Bronson. She most recently attended the Covenant of Faith Christian Center, Iola. She especially loved to read from the Bible and share the Lord with her grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin Whitcomb in 1970; infant son, Melvin Dwayne; two daughters, Sandra Ruth in 1956, and Debra Kay Stewart in 2006; two brothers, Clarence and Ralph Main; and two sisters, Helen Burris and Wilma Whitcomb.

She is survived by four sons, Donald Whitcomb and wife, Wanda, of Centerville, Kan., Charles Robert "C.R." Whitcomb and Susan White of Kincaid, Kan., David Whitcomb and wife, Carolyn, of Kincaid, Kan., Wayne Whitcomb and wife, Susie, of Kincaid, Kan.; two daughters, Phyllis Jackson and husband, Darrell, of Mound City, Kan., and Cheryl Moore and husband, Rick, of Kincaid, Kan.; 22 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 7, at the Kincaid Selma United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Osage Cemetery. Friends may call after noon, Sunday, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett. The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kincaid Fair Association and left in care of the funeral home.
