Vivian Corine Burris, 92, died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Christian Health Care, Nevada. She was born June 16, 1919, to Walter Tyree Newland and Neva Ellen (Flagg) Newland. She was married April 14, 1946, to Harold "Vernon" Burris, and he preceded her in death Aug. 12, 2001.

Vivian grew up on the family farm south of Harwood, Mo., and enjoyed caring for the many different farm animals. Vivian attended Lowe Grade School in Clear Creek Township and graduated from Walker High School in 1937. Her first employment was at the Nevada Chamber of Commerce. Afterwards she worked at the Vernon County ASCS Office for 30 years. Following retirement in 1974, she began working for attorney, Wm. G. McCaffree at the McCaffree, Landoll and Slaby Law Firm, in Nevada. She worked there for 32 years, retiring in June 2006.

Vivian and her husband enjoyed raising Belgian draft horses and mules. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nevada. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Mt. Vernon Cemetery for many years, where several decedents of her family are buried.

She is survived by a niece, Elaine and her husband, Terry Gilmore, of Greenwood, Ind.; a great-niece, Christi and her husband, Doug Webster, and their children, Adam and Elizabeth of O'Fallon, Mo.; also several cousins and a circle of friends of her past co-workers and Methodist Church Ladies Group. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Lora "Mildred" Floyd.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 3, at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Walker, Mo., with Lester Thornton officiating.

Friends may call now and until noon on Saturday at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.
