Paul "Lee" Groves

Paul Lee Groves, 80, LaCygne, Kan., formerly of Nevada, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was born May 20, 1931, in Kansas City, Kan., to Lawrence Franklin Groves and Josephine Lee Johnson Groves. He married Daisy E. Watson on Oct. 26, 1946, in Girard, Kan., and she survives of the home.

Lee was raised in the Nevada area and attended Nevada schools. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years from 1951-1955 as gun captain on the U.S.S. Iowa during the Korean Conflict. Lee lived in Independence, Mo., and worked for the Ruan Trucking Co. of Kansas City, Kan., for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the LaCygne United Methodist Church and has lived in LaCygne, Kan., for the past 26 years.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy, of the home; one daughter, Sherry Ratcliffe and her husband, Roy, LaCygne, Kan.; grandchildren, Lisa Wilson, Los Angeles, Calif., Chris Butler, Independence, Mo., Christina McLaughlin, Independence, Mo., Brandy Ratcliffe, Shawnee, Kan., Misty Willey, Blue Springs, Mo., Lora Carney, Lathrop, Mo., and Shawn Ratcliffe, Gardner, Kan.; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul Lee Groves Jr.; one brother, Lawrence Groves; and mother and stepfather, Leonard "Pete" Groves.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church, LaCygne, Kan., on Monday, May 7. A graveside service with military rites will follow at 3 p.m., Monday, May 7, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada. Friends may call now and until 8 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
