Hume basketball swept at home

HUME, Mo. -- The Hume High School boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams hosted Rich Hill Tuesday night and struggled in both contests, ultimately allowing Rich Hill to complete the sweep.

In the girls' game, the Lady Hornets had to work from behind the whole way through the contest. The Lady Hornets were forced to play without senior point guard Emily Brooks and two other starters for a significant portion of the game due to illness, injury and foul trouble, and Rich Hill took advantage, holding Hume to just 36 points and taking the victory by a final score of 39-36.

"Losing Emily Brooks with a knee injury hit us hard, but we are playing very well," Lady Hornets head coach Delanya Thompson said. "If we hadn't had one of our starters out for a while with illness and one fouled out early in the fourth quarter, this game would have ended differently."

Tori Sears led the Lady Hornets with 11 points and 15 rebounds in the contest, while Megan Sutcliffe posted a double-double of her own with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kaitlee Metcalf led the Lady Hornets in assists as she finished the night with nine.

In the boys' game, Hume fell behind, 31-4, after a quarter and were unable to recover, falling by a final score 65-15.

Despite the early hole, Hume kept plugging away. The Hornets' best quarter was the fourth, when they put together seven points while holding the visitors to nine. The halftime difference was 43-8.

"We had problems getting the ball down the court and then we would hurry our shots," noted Hume head coach David Brooks. "But we did work the ball around better in the second half and we didn't give up. The boys kept playing hard."

Jeremy Lewis and Riley Patton both netted four points, while Rhett Spencer added three and Billy Thompson and Cain Crawford two for the Hornets.

Both squads are scheduled to be back in action tonight, when they host Bronaugh. The first of the two games on the scheduled is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
