Cottey Comets defeat Wentworth on the road

The Cottey College Comets rallied from a six-point deficit with 3 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the game to defeat Wentworth Military Academy, 66-62, Wednesday night, at Lexington, Mo.

Freshman Dayna Turnbull led Cottey with 20 points and was joined in double figures by second-year Comets Blaklee Sanders with 17 and Bailey Braden with 10. Selena Gochenour added four points for the Comets, while Petra Stankovic finished with two and Cassi Hale had one.

Sanders grabbed 17 rebounds, but the Comets were out-rebounded, 50-37, by the Lady Red Dragons. Turnbull finished the night with a double-double as she dished out a team-high 12 assists.

As a team, the Comets finished 26-for-66 from the field and two-for-16 from 3-point range. The Comets finished the night with 21 assists and 15 turnovers.

Wentworth made only eight of its 17 attempts at the free throw line while Cottey was 12-for-18. Turnbull was 2-for-5 on 3-pointers and dished out 12 assists against the Lady Red Dragons.

With the win, the Comets' record improved to 10-0 on the year and the Lady Red Dragons are 4-12. Cottey will host another NJCAA D-II Region XVI rival Saturday afternoon when the Penn Valley Lady Scouts visit the Hinkhouse Center.
