History provides lessons on gun use

Saturday, January 26, 2013

Dear Editor:

As I understand the Second Amendment, it was for citizens to own a militia rifle and have the right to keep and bear arms, and be ready at a minute's notice to defend freedom against all enemies, foreign or domestic.

As I understand American history, most of the armed forces were state militia up to Civil War times. They wanted citizens to have the same type rifle as the military had.

This had nothing to do with hunting. The politicians want to go back to the '90's polices. Most of those policies didn't work. They thought having fewer licensed dealers was the answer.

Many of their customers started buying at gun shows with few regulations. Only licensed dealers are under "BATF" regulations.

On mental health, the ACLU won a court case several years ago that allows more people to live at home. Some don't stay on their meds.

On the schools and local police, I think they seem to be doing a good job.
