Fatal crash on I-49

An early morning crash that occurred 3 miles south of Nevada on Interstate 49 on the morning of Feb. 2, left a young girl, Landry F. Heese, 7, of Carthage, dead and four other occupants of the vehicle injured.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Krehbiel, the accident happened when Daniel D. Castor, 33, also of Carthage, lost control of the 2003 Ford F250 pickup he was driving. According to the investigating officer, Castor was traveling northbound when he lost control of the vehicle on some ice, went off the roadway and overturned.

Heese was pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Coroner David Ferry. Castor received serious injuries in the incident and was transported to the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. Passenger Andrew M. Heese, 39, of Carthage was seriously injured and transported to Freeman West Hospital. Avery J. Heese, 10, of Carthage, received moderate injuries during the crash. She was transported to Freeman West Hospital. Kip A. Castor, 7, of Carthage received minor injuries and was transported to the Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. The vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by Garwood's Towing.
