Obituaries

Elmer J. Kirby

Elmer J. Kirby, 86. Nevada, died June 18, 2004, at his home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Harwood, to Johnnie Kirby and Edna Smith Kirby. He married Neva Lucille Emmert on March 30, 1941, in Harwood, and she preceded him in death.

He was born and raised in Vernon County and spent virtually his entire life here. He graduated from Harwood High School. Later he served in the Army Engineer Corps from 1943-1946 and spent time overseas in Europe. Following his time in the service, he worked for the MKT Railroad his whole working life, retiring in 1974. He refereed basketball in the area for many years. He was an avid bingo player, bowler and horseshoe pitcher. He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Poe, Wichita, Kan.; one brother-in-law, Clarence Emmert, Tulsa, Okla.; one sister-in-law, Margie Long, Belton; two nieces, JoAnn Trude, Sheldon, and Sue Griffin, Wichita, Kan.; one nephew, J.E. Brown, Harwood; one great-niece, caretaker and guardian, Linda Brower, Schell City; among several other nieces, nephews; several great-nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by one niece, Marlyene Carl.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 21, at Ferry Funeral Home with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Green Mound Cemetery, Harwood. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 9-10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.

Memorials may be given to the Harwood Cemetery Association in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Georgia Faye Bush

Georgia Faye Bush, 90, died June 13, 2004. Services were held at Antioch Cemetery on June 19, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Paul Mooney officiating. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery. Arrangements by Ferry Funeral Home.

Carl Allen Steffan

Carl Allen Steffan, 46, died June 12, 2004. Graveside services were held at Newton Burial Park on June 19, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Musical selection was "Amazing Grace." Soloist was Ann Hollister. Pallbearers were John Haggans, Douglas Harper, Kirk Kercher, Chris Leer, Lee Ogle, Ken Thron, P.J. Thron and Tony Kral. Honorary pallbearers were Brett Kercher, Caden Leer, Drayton Leer, Dakota Thron, Kenneth Thron and Bryant Wilson. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
