Ernest Carl Jacobson

Ernest Carl Jacobson, 62, of Fort Scott, Kan., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Mercy Health Center. He was born Jan. 13, 1942, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Carl Elmer Jacobson and Dorothy Eugenia Lowry. Ernie was a 1960 graduate of Fort Scott High School. He served in the United States Army from Dec. 1963 until Nov. 1966. He was retired from Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing in Wichita, Kan.

Survivors include one son, Quentin Jacobson, St. John's, Kan.; four daughters, Luisa Dilly, Nevada, Dawn Pollen, Omaha, Neb., Tonya Jackson, Jonesboro, N.C., and Megan Cunningham, St. John's, Kan.; his father, Carl Jacobson, Fort Scott, Kan.; three brothers, Nicholas Jacobson, Centreville, Va., Michael Jacobson, Osawatomie, Kan., and Timothy Jacobson, Pittsburg, Kan.; two sisters, Debbie Robinson and Nancy Cliffman both of Fort Scott; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Eugenia Jacobson Hunt.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday in the U. S. National Cemetery with William James Schafer officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No.1165 V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m., Friday until leaving for the cemetery at 10:40 a.m. at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Ernest Jacobson Memorial Fund and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701.

Harry Allen Wood

Harry Allen Wood, 77, Nevada, died Aug. 4, 2004, at his home following a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 9, 1926, in Blue Springs, Neb., the son of Currie and Relitha Wood. He was married to Ellen Sunderland on March 10, 1947.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 24, 1944, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 23, 1946, after serving in the Asian Pacific theater. He graduated from Colorado State University at Fort Collins, Colo., in 1949. He was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church, the National Huguenot Society, the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne, Elks, Shriners and the VFW. He owned and operated the Credit Bureau of Vernon County since 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen L. Wood, of the home; one daughter, Connie Mische, New Orleans, La.; two sons, Tom Wood, New Orleans, La., and Glen Wood, Bowling Green, Va.; one sister, Virginia Hupe, Wamega, Kan.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debora Morris; two sisters, Mary Elle Tighe and Helen Bayer; and one infant brother.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to either the All Saints Episcopal Church or the Cancer Society.

Lloyd Lester Dirck Jr.

Lloyd Lester Dirck Jr., 52, died July 30, 2004. Services were held at the National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan., today at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Verl Strong officiating. Pallbearers were Gregg Piotrowski, Bob Piotrowski, Jason Snodgrass, Jeff Snodgrass, Rob Gadornski, Steve Edwards, Scott Morris and Rick Taylor. Interment was in the National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan. Arrangements were by Ferry Funeral Home.

Betty L. Bates

Betty L. Bates, Nevada, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada. Family information and funeral arrangements will be announced later by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
