Obituaries

Terry Walter Balk

Terry Walter Balk, 53, Nevada, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004. He was born Sept. 2, 1951, in Nevada, to Walter Richard Balk and Evelyn Leone Wallace. He married Blanche Hutchison on Aug. 7, 1976, in Nevada, and she survives of the home.

Terry was raised in Walker and spent virtually his entire life in Vernon County. He graduated from Walker High School. He served in the Missouri National Guard in the early 1970s. He was a member of the Rinehart Christian Church, the Farm Bureau Board, the NRA, Republican County Committee and the Gideons. Terry made his living in construction and cattle farming.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Blanche, include three sons, Clint Newby, St. Louis, Russell Newby, Republic, Mo., Waylon Balk, Walker; two daughters, Tracy Loyd, Sheldon, Tera Elliott, Horton; 10 grandchildren, Trayce Loyd, Josie Loyd, Clayton Loyd, and Judd Loyd, all of Sheldon, Caroline Newby, and Jasmine Newby, both of St. Louis, Hayley Newby, Republic, Mo., Craig Elliott and Catie Elliott, both of Horton, and Wesley Balk, Walker; mother, Evelyn Balk, Walker; four sisters, Vernille Cubbage, Nevada, Arlene Hutchison, Roscoe, Mo., Roenna Echols, Gainesville, Texas, and Annette Balk, Scottsdale, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his father; and two sisters, Francille Pettibon and Jeanette Bartholomei.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the Rinehart Christian Church, Richards, with the Rev. Gary Reed officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. The family receives friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Deaths

H. Fern Roland

H. Fern Roland, 98, of Stover, Mo., formerly of Nevada, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover.

She is survived by one son, Robert Roland, of rural Stover; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Henrietta Philippi; her husband, Robert C. Roland; one daughter, Marietta Smith; one sister, Alice E. Werner; and one brother, Otis Philippi.

She will be cremated. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover.

Betty Cochran

Betty Cochran, 77, Nevada, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Christian Health Care in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born June 27, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo., to Lee H. Eichmann and Lena Marie Barnes Eichmann. She was married April 27, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., to Delbert E. Cochran. He preceded her in death Feb. 21, 1995.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nevada. She and her family moved to Nevada in the 1950s and lived the remainder of her life here. She worked at the Nevada State Hospital for many years until her retirement.

Survivors include two sons, James R. Cochran, Fontana, Calif., and Bryant Cochran, Nevada; two daughters, Judy Hutchison, Milo, Diana White, Carthage; one step-daughter, Shirley Alexander, Norborn, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and 10 step great-grandchildren; four brothers, Lee Eichmann, Kansas City, Mo., Tom Eichmann, Corpus Christi, Texas, Russell Eichmann, Vacidille, Calif., and Bill Eichmann, Grain Valley, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse; and two sisters, Virginia Cornett and Nadine Eichmann.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., today, Oct. 26, at Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood, with Merl Teer officiating. Pallbearers were Jimmie Hutchison, Hassel Hutchison, Michael Hartman, Jimmie Hecke, Jessie Hecke, Waylon White and Bobby Hecke. Interment was in Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood.

The family suggests that memorials may be made in her honor to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home. Arrangements were by Ferry Funeral Home.

Deaths

Freddy J. Holman

Freddy J. Holman, 70, Bronson, Kan., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin. He was born June 25, 1934, in Ava, Mo., the son of Fred Holman and Viola Kilburn Holman. He married Mary Morris. They later divorced. He served in the U. S. Army. He was retired from his own exterminator business known as Superior Termite Control.

Survivors include Mary Holman, Elsmore, Kan.; four sons, Gale Holman, El Dorado, Kan., Mike Holman, Moran, Kan., Ron Holman, Iola, Kan., and Grant Holman, Elsmore, Kan.; two daughters, Susie Sluder, Stark, Kan., and Teresa Holman, Nevada; a sister, Necia Holman, Fredonia, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Freddy Ray Holman.

Lloyd Houk will conduct graveside services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Bronson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until leaving for the cemetery at the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel. Friends may call at the Bronson Chapel any time after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
